2 hurt when small plane 'belly flops' in Riverside County

CORONA, Calif. (AP) — Riverside County authorities say two people were injured when a small airplane made an emergency landing and crashed in a field adjacent to Corona Municipal Airport.

The Press-Enterprise reports the single-engine plane took off Tuesday and immediately tried to return to the airport.

A witness tells the newspaper the aircraft "did a big belly flop."

Corona Fire Department spokesman John Deyoe says rescuers extricated the plane's two occupants. They were hospitalized with moderate to severe injuries. Deyoe did not know whether the injuries were life-threatening.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Allen Kenitzer says the plane is a Harmon Rocket, an experimental aircraft built from a kit.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating.
