AZUSA (CNS) - A suspected drunken driver was shot and killed by Azusa police following a traffic stop, and was publicly identified today.
Lorenzo Cesar Aguilar, 23, of Azusa, was dead where he fell in a vacant lot near a Mexican restaurant, said Lt. Larry Dietz of the Los Angeles County coroner's office.
Aguilar was shot in a vacant lot in the 700 block of East Alosta Avenue shortly before 9:30 p.m. Friday, sheriff's deputies said.
The shooting happened after officers tried to conduct a traffic stop of a suspected drunk driver, said Deputy Peter Gomez of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, which is assisting the Azusa Police Department in the shooting investigation.
Gomez said the driver did not stop and briefly attempted to evade the officers.
After stopping, the driver exited the vehicle carrying a handgun and began to walk away from the officers, before turning toward them, Gomez said.
The driver was then fired upon, Gomez said, without specifying how many officers discharged their firearms.
The shooting occurred in a vacant lot that backs onto the parking lot of Santana's Mexican Food at 700 E. Alosta Ave., said Los Angeles Fire Department Engine Company 32 Captain Mark Delgado.
The suspect was struck several times in the torso and pronounced dead at the scene, Gomez said.
No officers were injured, he said.
The shooting will also be investigated by the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office and the county Office of Independent Review, which is standard in such cases.
