LOS ANGELES (AP) — The officer shot several times by a gunman who opened fire inside a Los Angeles police station has been released from a hospital.

Officer Rosario Herrera says the 7-year veteran went home Tuesday night after recovering from multiple bullet wounds. His name has not been released.

Despite being wounded the officer managed to return fire, striking the suspect several times.

Daniel C. Yealu was hospitalized in critical condition. He was booked for investigation of attempted murder of a police officer. Bail was set at $2 million.

Yealu, who was licensed to work as a security guard and to carry a firearm, had applied to become an LA police officer but was rejected. Investigators couldn't immediately say if that played any role in the shootout.
