The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) Chief says he won’t lower standards in order to increase the number of police recruits.

Charlie Beck says although the department is having some trouble hiring enough new officers – he says it’s not at a critical point and he wants to make sure on the ‘right people’ are appointed.

The LAPD has fallen about 70 officers short this year of hiring enough recruits to replace retirees.

He says he’d like to eliminate some of the secrecy surrounding candidate evaluations and testing, and says he expects enough applicants will be found with better community outreach.
