LOS ANGELES (AP) — A mentally ill man convicted of setting a fire at a Hollywood synagogue has been sentenced to nearly 10 years in prison.
City News Service says the judge who sentenced Dmitriy Sheyko on Tuesday acknowledged his schizophrenia but said Sheyko deliberately went on a crime spree.
The 23-year-old must register as an arson offender. With time served, he could be released in two years but might face further confinement in a mental hospital if he's judged to be a continuing risk.
Sheyko was arrested in April of 2011 after he burglarized a market, broke into a home and set fires in the synagogue and to two unfinished homes and a truck.
He pleaded guilty to 22 counts and was ruled sane at the time of the crimes.
