SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Gov. Jerry Brown has signed legislation imposing tougher penalties on those who harass the children of celebrities and other public figures.
The bill from Democratic Sen. Kevin de Leon of Los Angeles would increase penalties for actions that include taking photos and video of a child without consent and in a harassing manner.
Actresses Halle Berry and Jennifer Garner testified in support of SB606. The women told lawmakers how their children are intimidated by aggressive photographers who follow them daily.
De Leon says his bill also will help protect the children of figures like police officers and judges, who may be susceptible to harassment or negative attention due to their parents' occupations.
Media organizations opposed the legislation, saying it was overly broad and could restrict legitimate newsgathering activities.
