CHULA VISTA (CNS) - Chula Vista police issued more than 70 citations during patrols aimed at curbing talking and texting on hand-held cell phones while driving, authorities said.

Officers fanned out throughout the city between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. Thursday in search of distracted drivers, according to a Chula Vista Police Department statement.

Of the more than 80 vehicles stopped during the patrols, 54 drivers were cited for talking on a cell phone while driving and 19 others were ticketed for texting, the statement said.

Seven drivers with a suspended license or without a license were also cited, and three of their vehicles were impounded, police said. Citations were also issued for a red light violation and one for driving without insurance.

The patrol was funded by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
