How to Date a Younger Person: Advice for people over 50

Dating a younger person can feel exciting and it can feel terrifying. Being the object of desire of a much younger mate can make one feel young themselves or, when prompted to compare, may inspire feelings of being older. There are few things to keep in mind when dating someone a decade or so younger.

As a Professor of Developmental Psychology, I can assure you that “age is only a number.” Biologically speaking, there exist “old” young people and “young” old people. Cellular aging is linked to genetics, health habits, and social attitudes. So, just because someone’s birth certificate reads younger, does not mean they are actually, biologically younger.

Secondly, there may be some practical considerations. Cocooning together in a romantic compartment may feel exciting, but eventually all relationships have to go somewhere. Relationships are a bridge between tribes, and those tribes may not be an inviting as you hope. You or your mate may have adult children (or teenagers!), previous spouses, or elderly parents that may not support the union. It’s important to provide a united front against the forces of tribal warfare.

Finally, don’t forget that the older partner always has more power. The senior lover usually has more financial security and with money comes clout. Be careful about abusing this power by encouraging your partner to share in decision making. But beyond finances there is some delicious wisdom that comes with age. Happy more life experience is powerful it’s important that you consider yourself a benevolent leader. Show patience and understanding when the “youngster” shows their age.
