LAFD Recruit Dies At Scene Of Traffic Crash On 101 Freeway In Studio City

STUDIO CITY (CNS) - A Los Angeles Fire Department recruit was killed Monday "while rendering aid at a traffic collision" on the Hollywood (101) Freeway in Studio City, authorities said.

The two-vehicle crash was reported at 5:11 a.m. on the northbound 101 Freeway at Campo de Cahuenga, according to the California Highway Patrol, which issued a SigAlert shutting down northbound lanes in the area.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, the CHP said. Information on his identity was not immediately available.

"The Los Angeles City Fire Department is saddened to announce the tragic loss of one of our recruit firefighters at a traffic collision this morning in Studio City," LAFD Capt. Erik Scott said in a statement.

"We extend our deepest sympathy to immediate family, friends, and loved ones during this incredibly difficult me," Scott said. "Details regarding the memorial service will be shared as they become available."

A procession was held late Monday morning from the incident crash to the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner's office at 1104 N. Mission Road.

According to Scott, the "LAFD recruit firefighter was fatally injured while rendering aid at a traffic collision on the 101 Freeway."

"Despite the best efforts of LAFD and other emergency responders, our recruit firefighter succumbed to injuries sustained," Scott's statement said. "The firefighter's name and additional details will be released after the family has been notified."

Authorities were investigating the circumstances of the crash, which reportedly involved a vehicle and a pickup truck with a trailer.
