LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Lakers legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was expected to undergo surgery Saturday after breaking his hip in a fall at a concert Friday night.
"Last night while attending a concert, Kareem had an accidental fall and broke his hip. He will have surgery today," his business partner Deborah Morales said in a statement posted Saturday on Abdul-Jabbar's X (formerly Twitter) account. "We are all deeply appreciative of all the support for Kareem, especially from the Los Angeles Fire Department who assisted Kareem on site and the amazing medical team and doctors at UCLA Hospital who are taking great care of Kareem now."
It wasn't immediately clear where the incident occurred.
Abdul-Jabbar is 76. He is the NBA's second all-time leading scorer and led the Lakers to five NBA championships, winning another one with the Milwaukee Bucks. Prior to that, he led UCLA to three straight NCAA titles.
In recent years he's been active as an author, blogger and social activist.
