US Beaches, Pools Struggling To Open In Face Of Lifeguard Shortage

The United States has entered the swimming season, but the shortage of lifeguards remains a pressing issue for pools and beaches across the country.

Water recreation destinations nationwide are reporting a lack of lifeguards to ensure the safety of swimmers. Some beaches and pools have postponed their openings as they continue to search for qualified individuals to fill lifeguard positions. In locations like Madison, Wisconsin, popular summer spots are operating without lifeguards, displaying unfortunate "no lifeguard on duty" signs. Madison Aquatic and Parks Coordinator Shane Martin expresses his concerns, stating, "Having lifeguards would significantly enhance safety and contribute to the well-being of the neighborhoods surrounding these beaches."

However, Martin hasn't given up on finding lifeguards. He explains,

"We've actively participated in multiple job fairs at high schools and distributed flyers throughout the town—doing everything possible to attract applicants and generate interest."
