A Virginia jury has indicted the mother of a 6-year-old boy who shot his teacher in January.

According to Newport News Commonwealth Attorney Howard Gwynn, a grand jury indicted the boy's mother, Deja Taylor, on charges of felony child neglect and recklessly leaving a loaded firearm within a child's reach on Monday. According to Virginia state law, felony child neglect carries a prison sentence of up to five years, while recklessly leaving a loaded firearm is punishable by up to one year in prison.

According to Zwerner's attorney in response to the news, the accusations are:

“welcome” but “more people” need to be held accountable for the incident. Gywnn says, “If the Special Grand Jury determines that additional persons are criminally responsible under the law, it can return additional indictments."
