More Than 2,000 Skulls Discovered In Egyptian Temple

More than 200 years after the final resting place of Egyptian Pharaoh Ramses II was discovered, archaeologists are still finding new artifacts in the celebrated temple.

  • More than 200 mummified ram skulls have been discovered, according to the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities. "We came across some random pieces of skulls first," says Dr. Sameh Iskander, who headed the mission. “We didn't know what they were, but as we continued our excavation and exploration, all of sudden we found a whole area filled with ram skulls."
  • What makes the find especially interesting is scientists believe the skulls were placed in the tomb about a millennium after Ramses ruled Egypt, the ministry reports. Iskander says the fact that Egyptians were still placing tributes inside the temple a thousand years later shows what an impact Ramses had on the country.
