KCRA Sacramento reporter Ashley Zavala hit the jackpot when she tried to get answers about CA AG Rob Bonta and his Assemblywoman wife entering a conflict of interest into her overseeing the budget of his California Department of Justice.
This is all bad and these hacks know it.
As Assemblymember Mia Bonta and her husband, Attorney General Rob Bonta face increasing scrutiny with one Bonta set to oversee the other's budget, neither was willing to answer questions about the situation on Friday. As KCRA 3 first reported, the assemblymember is set to lead a budget committee that directly oversees funding for her husband, the attorney general's budget. State budget documents show the Department of Justice accounts for about $1.2 billion in taxpayer funds this year. Experts note, the situation the Bontas are in is legal. While Assemblymember Mia does not have the final say on the funds, experts note she has a lot of influence as the leader of the committee on what exactly gets through. Debate has been quietly happening at the state capitol on whether this is ethical.
The update is Mia Bonta ended up recusing herself, but clearly wouldn't have if nobody questioned her shady motives.
