This week a tourist thought it was a good idea to climb atop the steps of one of the most important monuments to ancient Mayan culture known as 'El Castillo,' and do a stupid little dance.
When she got down from the monument her self-perceived moment of glory was quickly over as the woman was met with shouts, boos, and water bottles being thrown at her by angry bystanders. The crowd could be heard shouting "idiot," "lock her up," and many other insults in Spanish. Many splashed water in her face, one woman even grabbed the attention-hungry tourist by the hair.
The monument is a protected site and people have been forbidden to climb its steps since 2008. The woman was taken into custody by police for questioning.
