At Twitter, Elon Musk wants his people to be productive. To help them achieve that, he sent out this leaked email to workers. In Musk’s eyes, these are the six rules for “insane productivity.” Check ‘em out – would you sign on?
- Reduce the Frequency of Meetings – To be honest, it’s hard to argue with that one. Most meetings could be handled in just a few emails.
- Leave Meetings That Aren’t Valuable – Musk says, “It’s not rude to leave, it’s rude to make someone stay and waste their time.” It’s hard to argue that one, either, assuming your boss won’t get all butt-hurt when you bail and penalize you.
- Don’t Use Acronyms or Nonsense Words – Be direct about what you’re trying to say.
- Don’t Use “Chain of Command” To Communicate – Take the shortest path to get the message across. Some workers feel obligated to go through the “chain of command.” According to Musk, “Any manager who attempts to enforce chain of command communication will soon find themselves working elsewhere.”
- Use Common Sense – Musk says that includes “following a company rule that’s obviously ridiculous in a particular situation.” Just cover your ass and be able to back the decision up if you take that route.
- Avoid Big Meetings – It seems like this was covered earlier. In this instance, Musk says meetings that are necessary should be kept short.
Really, this stuff seems pretty straightforward and valuable, and we all know that there’s no bigger waste of time at work than excessive meetings.
Still, would appear that it’s just too much for some.
Overnight, news broke that a number of employees decided to bail out – one former exec calling it a “mass exodus.”
