Man Killed in South Los Angeles Shooting

SOUTH LOS ANGELES (CNS) - A man killed in a car-to car shooting in the Hyde Park area of South Los Angeles was publicly identified Saturday.

Phillip Johnson was a 41-year-old Los Angeles resident, according to the coroner's office.

Officers from the Los Angeles Police Department's 77th Street Station responded at 1:20 a.m. Friday to a shots-fired call in the 1700 block of West 69th Street, where they found a man sitting in a black Kia suffering from gunshot wounds, LAPD Officer Annie Hernandez told City News Service.

Witnesses told police that a white U-Haul pulled up beside the victim, and several shots were fired at the Kia. The driver of the U-Haul then drove away.

Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene, Hernandez said.

Police did not know whether the shooting was gang-related, Hernandez said.
