SANTA ANA (CNS) - A 27-year-old Malibu man pleaded guilty Thursday and was immediately sentenced to a year in jail for sexually assaulting a woman in her 60s in Tustin.
Quin Kalis Sheridan, who has been in custody since Dec. 3, 2020, waived all of his custody credits to avoid state prison and be placed on probation, according to his attorney, Brian Gurwitz. Sheridan will have to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life and must also participate in a mental health treatment program.
Sheridan, who is expected to be released from jail in December, pleaded guilty to attempted forcible rape and assault with the intent to commit a sex offense, both felonies.
"This crime occurred in a public place in broad daylight solely because of Mr. Sheridan's schizophrenia," Gurwitz said. "He is deeply remorseful and committed to lifelong treatment of his serious illness."
Officers were called at 9:37 a.m. Dec. 3, 2020, to Robinson Drive, where Sheridan forced the woman to the ground and attempted to pull her pants off. The victim struggled, and though the suspect put his hand over her mouth, she managed to scream for help, police said.
A witness dashed over to help the woman, shoving the suspect off of her, prompting him to run away, police said.
Sheridan was found nearby, hiding in a restroom, and was taken into custody without incident, police said.
