Former Olympian Kim Glass Savagely Beaten In LA

Former Olympian Kim Glass is recovering from a brutal beating she received in Los Angeles over the weekend.

  • The U.S. volleyball star -- who won a silver medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympics -- says the attack happened Saturday in broad daylight after she was approached by a homeless man carrying a metal pipe. "He just like looked at me with some pretty hateful eyes," says Glass, who was left with a swollen eye and multiple facial fractures. "And as I turned to go tell my friend, 'I think something's, like, wrong with him, and I think he's going to hit a car,' before I knew it, a big metal bolt, like pipe, hit me. It happened so fast."
  • The alleged attacker, later identified as 51-year-old Semeon Tesfamariam, has been arrested on one count of felony assault with a deadly weapon, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. He's being held without bail, court records indicate. "Just be safe out there," Glass says in a message to her TikTok followers. "There's a lot of mentally ill people on these streets right now and you shouldn't have to be fearful when you walk but it's true. And, so, you guys just be safe."
  • Are random attacks on strangers usually the result of some sort of mental illness?
