The move came at the hands of Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt, who signed an order that outlawed abortion shortly after the Supreme Court's decision was announced.

"This is a monumental day for the sanctity of life," Schmitt said after signing the legislation. "Today, following the United States Supreme Court's ruling that overturned Roe v Wade, with the issuance of an attorney general opinion, my office has yet again reinforced Missouri's dedication to protecting the sanctity of life, both born and unborn."

At least 10 other states are expected to follow Missouri's lead.

Early on Friday, Supreme Court justices overturned Roe v Wade in a 6-3 vote, handing the power to decide whether abortion is legal to individual states.
