The judge overseeing the federal civil rights trial of accused George Floyd killer Derek Chauvin on has signed off on a plea agreement that will have Chauvin serve 20 to 25 years in prison.
The deal comes almost five months after the ex-Minneapolis police officer plead guilty to violating Floyd's civil rights by pressing his knee into his neck in May 2020, killing him.
Had the plea agreement not come through, Chauvin could have faced life in prison.
Pushing for the max 25 years, prosecutors say Chauvin will likely be credited for time already served, making his sentence between 17 to 21 years.
Chauvin is already serving a sentence of more than 22 years for the murder conviction handed down last year during his criminal trial.
