In response to growing unionization efforts among its workers, Starbucks is increasing benefits...for non-union employees.
This week, the company revealed a $200 million program that includes pay raises, additional training and more sick time.
However, the new benefits won't be offered to stores that have unionized or are planning union votes.
CEO Howard Schultz says this is because US labor laws require union stores to negotiate their own benefits, however union officials say Schultz is violating labor laws by purposely excluding them.
So far, about 50 Starbucks stores have voted to unionize (at least 17 of those are in California) and over 250 have petitioned to vote for unionization.
