Federal Judge: No Bail For Accused Subway Shooter

Frank James was taken into custody today in Manhattan and has been charged with a federal crime.

  • Police say James called Crime Stoppers himself, saying he heard police were looking for him.
  • James’ arrest came more than 24 hours into an expansive search for him.
  • James is accused of shooting 10 people aboard a New York subway train won't be going home anytime soon.
  • A federal judge on Thursday ordered 62-year-old Frank James to be held without bail as he awaits a trial on terrorism charges.
“The defendant terrifyingly opened fire on passengers on a crowded subway train, interrupting their morning commute in a way the city hasn’t seen in more than 20 years,” Assistant Attorney Sara K. Winik told the judge before he made his decision.
“The defendant’s attack was premeditated, was carefully planned, and it caused terror among the victims and our entire city.”
  • Five of the 10 people who were shot in the incident remain in critical but stable condition, authorities say. An additional 13 people were hurt in a stampede as frightened passengers fled from the subway car.
  • Being that people are supposed to be considered innocent until proven guilty, is it fair to hold anyone without bail?
