Brittney Griner in Russia Gets U.S. Officials Visit

  • A U.S. Embassy official visited detained WNBA star Brittney Griner in Russia.
  • A spokesperson from the U.S. State Department shared the information on Wednesday, noting to CNN that Griner appeared "to be in good condition."
  • According to the spokesperson, the U.S. "will do everything we can to see that she is treated fairly throughout this ordeal."
  • Griner's lawyers, meanwhile, have been able to visit her during her time in Russia.
  • How long do you think Brittney Griner will be detained in Russia? How do you think this will affect her basketball career?

At least one analyst believes things could get really bad for Brittney Griner.

  • Appearing on Fox News, Russian law expert Peter Maggs said Griner's case could potentially result in a 5-10 year prison sentence - and include time at a labor camp.
  • The 31-year-old WNBA star was arrested earlier this year after Russian officials allegedly found vape cartridges containing cannabis oil.
  • Maggs also said Griner could be innocent - he says Russian authorities have been known to plant drugs on people "if the regime wanted to get them in trouble".
  • What should the U.S. government do about Griner's arrest? Is it possible she's being used as a pawn by the Russian government?
