LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Criminal proceedings were suspended today after a doubt was declared about the mental competency of a man who allegedly stabbed his stepfather to death and wounded his mother in Playa del Rey.

Alonzo Mansel, 23, was charged Jan. 13 with one count each of murder and attempted murder.

Police responded Jan. 11 to a home in the 200 block of Redlands Street, near Vista Del Mar, in connection with a report that two people had been stabbed. A search began for the suspect, and police identified a suspect they said matched witnesses' descriptions and had driven from the scene.

The suspect crashed a car onto a sidewalk at the intersection of Sepulveda Boulevard and Manchester Avenue in Westchester and tried to run from officers, but they reportedly found him hiding in an alley near an IHOP restaurant.

The fatally injured victim was later identified as Harvey Lee Huddleston, 77, of Playa del Rey.

Mansel was arrested that night by Los Angeles police and remains behind bars in lieu of $3 million bail.

A status conference is set March 17 for Mansel in a downtown Los Angeles courtroom.
