The Republican National Committee is threatening to pull its candidates out of presidential debates.
In a letter sent this week to the Commission on Presidential Debates, RNC chair Ronna McDaniel called for multiple reforms to the debate process, accusing the CPD of treating Republicans unfairly.
"So long as the CPD appears intent on stonewalling the meaningful reforms necessary to restore its credibility with the Republican Party as a fair and nonpartisan actor, the RNC will take every step to ensure that future Republican presidential nominees are given that opportunity elsewhere," McDaniel wrote.
Now, the RNC is suggesting a rule change that would require its candidates to promise not to take part in any debates held by the CPD.
"These proposals are common sense solutions for an organization whose unique, nonpartisan role in American elections requires it to stand above the political fray," the RNC said.
The Commission says it deals with candidates directly, and that its 2024 debates will be based on "fairness" and "neutrality".
