Police today sought the public's help in locating a vehicle driven by an attempted murder suspect who was able to elude authorities during a high-speed chase over a freeway and surface streets in the San Fernando Valley.

The pursuit began in the Encino area just after 6:30 p.m. Saturday, the Los Angeles Police Department reported. Police and two TV news helicopters lost track of the suspect when the car exited the Golden State (5) Freeway near the border between the San Fernando and Santa Clarita valleys. The search was called off at 7:09 p.m.

Speeds exceeded 140 mph on the freeway, according to NBC4. The suspect got on and off the 5 Freeway at times and onto surface streets in the Sylmar and Mission Hills areas.  Police had not identified the suspect as of Sunday morning, and no details were available regarding the alleged attempted murder that prompted the chase.

The car is a black Dodge Charger with Texas license plates. Anyone with any information regarding the suspect or the vehicle was asked to call the LAPD's Valley Traffic Division at 818-644-8000.
