A new social media challenge to honor TV legend Betty White - the #BettyWhiteChallenge - is taking over social media for a good cause!

Users all over social media are urging people around the world to take part in the #BettyWhiteChallenge.

The #BettyWhiteChallenge is a new challenge encouraging people to donate $5 to a local animal shelter on January 17th - the date White would have turned 100 years old.

The hashtag picked up steam after the actor, Ryan Reynolds tweeted about White's passing. A Twitter user named Lisa Powell would respond to his tweet suggesting people donate in White's honor.

White was a big animal advocate and loved animals, she donated to multiple animal rescues throughout her life. She worked very closely with the LA Zoo since it's opening in 1996.

In 2006, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa honored White as the City of Los Angeles' "Ambassador to the Animals" for all she did to help animals. White even wrote a book called, "Betty & Friends : My Life at the Zoo", proceeds benefitted GLAZA and the LA Zoo.
