Mom Charged for Encouraging Daughter to Punch Basketball Opponent

A month after a California girl sucker-punched an opposing basketball player during a youth game, her mother has been charged for encouraging the on-court violence.

  • La Puente resident Latira Shonty Hunt, 44, has been charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor and battery in connection with the incident, according to the Orange County District Attorney's Office. Charging documents indicate Hunt yelled at her daughter from the stands during the November 7th game, telling her, "You better hit her for that!" The girl, whose dad is former Chicago Bulls player Corey Benjamin, then punched her opponent in the head, laying her out on the court, video reveals.
  • "It is unconscionable that a parent would encourage her child to engage in violence during a sporting event," says Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer. "Youth sports are invaluable in teaching our children discipline, teamwork and sportsmanship. But a win at all costs mentality that is completely devoid of fair play, respect and civility is disgusting. We as parents have the fundamental responsibility to raise our children to be good human beings who treat others with kindness and humanity."
  • Should Child Protective Services investigate? Or do you feel the mom was unjustly charged?
