The U.S. government has launched a formal investigation into Tesla's Autopilot system.
- The NHTSA believes that Autopilot has difficulties spotting parked emergency vehicles with flashing lights, or other similar roadside hazards.
- Autopilot has also been misused by drivers, who are supposed to be alert and ready to take over control. Some have used Autopilot while drunk or even riding in the backseat.
- A total of 25 crashes since 2016 have involved Tesla Autopilot, causing 10 deaths.
