Although the U.S. heat-wave moved into Canada over the weekend, that doesn't mean it isn't continuing to bake residents of the Pacific Northwest. Temperatures in the area climbed as high as 50 degrees higher than average on Monday, meteorologists say.
- Portland, Oregon -- which shattered records with a high of 112 degrees on Sunday -- was expected to get more of the same on Monday, forecasters say. Seattle set two new records on Sunday, topping 104 degrees for the first time and experiencing back-to-back days with highs exceeding 100 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. And it's on track to set a new three-day record on Monday, per the NWS.
- Forecasters are blaming the record temperatures on an "unusual weather pattern" called a "heat dome," which occurs approximately once every 1,000 years.
