LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Another bout of high heat is expected in parts of the Southland this weekend, and while temperatures aren't expected to be as high as last week, they will still hit triple digits in some areas and raise fears of heat illness and fires.

“High pressure will build across the Pacific Northwest over the weekend and persist over the entire West Coast through much of next week,'' according to the National Weather Service. “This weather pattern will not be as hot and dry for interior valleys, mountains and deserts of southwest California as last week's heat wave. However, minimum humidity of 7-15 percent will be common for interior portions with minimal overnight recoveries and daily temperatures of 100-110 degrees.''

With the low humidity and high heat, “elevated fire weather conditions are to be expected each day, with abnormally dry fuel beds very susceptible to fire starts.''

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health issued an extreme heat warning that will be in effect from Saturday through Tuesday in the Santa Clarita and Antelope valleys, and from Sunday through Tuesday in the western San Fernando Valley.

A less-severe heat alert will be in effect from Sunday through Tuesday in the eastern San Fernando and San Gabriel valleys, and from Monday into Tuesday for the Los Angeles Basin.

Health officials urged residents to stay hydrated, wear sunscreen and lightweight clothing, beware of symptoms of heat stroke and check on vulnerable friends and relatives, such as the sick, older adults, pregnant women, children and those who live alone.
