LOS ANGELES (CNS) - A Memorial Day shooting in South Los Angeles in which a 19-year-old man was killed and a second man was also wounded started in a parking lot outside a local business and ended in a collision, the sheriff's department reported today.
The shooting happened just after 3 p.m. Monday in the 1300 block of Slauson Avenue, Deputy Eva Jimenez said.
The investigation began as a call about a crash involving a vehicle and a pedestrian near the intersection of Hooper and Slauson avenues. However, arriving deputies found two men suffering from gunshot wounds.
The younger of the two victims was transported to a hospital, where he later died, Jimenez said. His name was withheld pending notification of his family. The other man, 21, was hospitalized for treatment of a gunshot wound, which was not life-threatening, according to an update issued by the Sheriff's Department this morning.
Deputies said four men were walking out of a local business – which CBS2 identified as a marijuana dispensary -- when they exchanged words with two men in the parking lot.
The four were driving out of the lot when at least one of the two men they had encountered fired multiple rounds at their vehicle, according to the Sheriff's Information Bureau.
The teenage driver and a passenger in the front seat were not struck by bullets. But while being shot at, the teen drove into a pick-up truck as the two suspects fled on foot.
The truck's driver was taken to a hospital, where he was treated and released.
