BEVERLY HILLS (CNS) - A 29-year-old man was in custody this morning, suspected of stealing a car and leading police on a short pursuit that ended in a crash in Beverly Hills -- followed by a more than three-hour standoff that concluded when a SWAT team dropped non-lethal gas canisters into the vehicle.
The pursuit began around 5 p.m. Monday and ended when the vehicle struck a pedestrian and two other vehicles, injuring two more people, near Wilshire Boulevard and Doheny Drive, Beverly Hills police Lt. Max Subin told reporters at the scene.
After the crash, the man briefly got out of the car, then immediately returned inside the vehicle, Subin said.
The suspect used blankets and sleeping bags to cover the vehicle's windows, making it tough for officers to see inside, Subin said, adding the man was alone and no weapons were seen.
About 8:30 p.m., officers inserted non-lethal gas canisters into the vehicle and the suspect crawled out and was taken into custody.
He was taken to a hospital for treatment, then arrested.
All three victims injured in the crash were taken to a hospital and were released Monday night, NBC4 reported.
The suspect was identified by the station as Daniel Allen of Santa Clarita, who allegedly stole the vehicle from Santa Clarita.
The intersection of Wilshire Boulevard and Doheny Drive was reopened around 11 p.m.
