LOS ANGELES (CNS) - City Councilman Bob Blumenfield announced today that Los Angeles has received $30.7 million for Canoga Park transportation projects, including improvements to the Sherman Way commercial corridor, through a grant from the California Transportation Commission.
“I've sought many avenues to bring major transportation and accessibility improvements to Canoga Park and the West Valley -- this grant will make a whole lot of critical projects possible,'' Blumenfield said. “Thanks to Hilary Norton and the California Transportation Commission for making this possible as well as Streets LA, LADOT and every community member who helped highlight the need for these improvements in our community.''
The grant will fund transportation projects in the area bounded by Vanowen Street, Saticoy Street, Topanga Canyon Boulevard and DeSoto Avenue, including:
-- building new sidewalks, crosswalks and curb cuts;
-- building new bike lanes, including ones that are protected on Owensmouth Avenue and Sherman Way, as well as a protected bike connection between the L.A. Metro G (Orange) Line and the L.A. River bike path;
-- making improvements to transit stops, such as new shade structures at the L.A. Metro G Line Sherman Way station;
-- making low-traffic streets into new bike- and pedestrian-prioritized areas.
The grant is provided from state and federal funds through the state commission's Active Transportation Program and will be boosted by a $7.9 million local match.
The project has been in the works since 2017, when Los Angeles was awarded a Climate Adaption Planning Grant of $300,000. The city used that funding to hold workshops with the community to understand how Canoga Park could be improved.
StreetsLA, which prepared the latest grant application, worked with Climate Resolve and Alta Planning to develop ideas for the application.
