LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Federal agents seized more than $110,000 in counterfeit U.S. currency at Los Angeles International Airport in a shipment originating from Hong Kong with a destination in Northern California, officials said today.
Authorities discovered the counterfeit notes in a package on Friday, said Jaime Ruiz of U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
“Inside the package, officers found 492 pieces of counterfeit $100 notes and 3,049 pieces of $20 counterfeit notes with a combined face value of $100,180,'' Ruiz said.
The items were noticed based in part on the quality of the printing and on the shipping method, Ruiz said.
“By preventing the introduction of counterfeit currency into the American economy, CBP disrupts criminal groups that target our citizens, businesses and the security of the United States financial system,'' said Carlos C. Martel, CBP director of field operations in Los Angeles.
