Los Angeles basketball legend Elgin Baylor has died of natural causes, his family announced Monday. He was 86 years old.
- Baylor spent 14 seasons with the Lakers, making the NBA's All-Star team 11 times during the 1960s. He was named Rookie of the Year in 1959, the same year he scored a record-breaking 64 points in a single game. He also held the record for the most points scored in a playoff game for 24 years -- until Michael Jordan beat it.
"Elgin was the superstar of his era — his many accolades speak to that,” says Lakers Governor Jeanie Buss.
- After retiring in 1971 at the age of 37, Baylor accepted an assistant coaching position with the New Orleans Jazz, eventually going on to replace Head Coach Butch van Breda Kolff. He returned to Los Angeles in 1986 when he was hired by the Clippers to serve as the team's vice president.
