LOS ANGELES (CNS) - The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate held steady at 12.6% in January, the same rate as December but well above the 4.8% rate from a year ago prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to figures released today by the state Employment Development Department.
In Orange County, where seasonally adjusted numbers were not available, the January jobless rate was 7.4%, also unchanged from December.
Statewide, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 9% in January, down from 9.3% in December, but well above the 4.2% rate from January 2020. The comparable estimates for the nation were 6.3% in January, 6.7% in December and 3.5% in January 2020.
According to the EDD, total nonfarm employment in Los Angeles County dropped by 84,800 jobs between December and January to reach about 4.02 million. The leisure and hospitality sector and the trade, transportation and hospitality sector posted the biggest job losses, both shedding 25,700 positions, according to the agency.
