A federal investigation is underway into an alleged scam that sent millions of counterfeit N95 masks to hospitals and health care facilities across the country.
- Authorities say the masks are made to closely resemble the N95 masks manufactured by 3M, but are fakes - and can't be trusted. They're often purchased from unauthorized distributors - some of which appeared to be brand-new companies.
- Washington state says it spent $1.4 million on 300,000 masks that turned out to be fake. Homeland Security has confiscated more than 10 million counterfeit masks since the pandemic began.
- How were companies able to slip through the cracks like this? Could it have been prevented?
