San Francisco Man Loses $220M because he couldn't Remember Bitcoin Password

A San Francisco man is out $220 million -- because he can't remember his Bitcoin password.

  • Stefan Thomas says he actually forgot his password back in 2012, and he's spent the last eight years trying to remember it. "There were sort of a couple weeks where I was just desperate; I don't have any other word to describe it," Thomas says. "You sort of question your own self-worth. What kind of person loses something that important?"
  • Since then, Thomas says, he's "made peace" with his massive loss, adding, "Time heals all wounds." That's not to say all hope is lost. Bitcoin gives users 10 attempts to type in their password before the system shuts them out permanently. Thomas says he still has two attempts left.
  • Have you ever suffered serious repercussions from forgetting a password?
