A New Season: Winter Solstice 2020 Is Here

Even though it doesn't feel like it in California, Winter has officially arrived!

The winter solstice started at exactly 5:02 a.m. Eastern time -- making today, Monday, the shortest day (and longest night) of the year in terms of how much daylight we get. But the biggest buzz this year is the super-rare "Christmas star" that will be shining in the southwestern sky starting tonight!

The "star" will actually be Saturn and Jupiter on a path that will brings them closer to each other than they have been in almost 800 years! But from our view here on Earth, it will appear as one big twinkling star for the next few nights.

But wait! There's more!

A meteor shower will light up the sky on Monday as well. The shower will peak tonight shortly after midnight, with 5-10 meteors visible per hour. However, it might be tough to spot in certain areas -- due to cloudy skies and a half-full moon obscuring the view.

According to NASA, the best time to 'tune in' is from 12:30-1:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning.
