Convicted sex offender Cary Jay Smith was recently released from Coalinga State Hospital in Fresno County after a 5300 hold on him expired, according to the Orange County District Attorney's Office. He had been in custody of state medical facilities for nearly two decades.

Since being released, Smith moved from his adult living facility in Orange County to the city of Corona... Then, according to authorities, he moved again late Saturday night to Lake Elsinore... Then he moved again.

“Cary decided to leave the Lake Elsinore area. Thank you to everyone who engaged with us upon learning he was in our community,” the Riverside County Sheriff’s Lake Elsinore station posted on Facebook.

According to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, the 59-year-old convicted sex offender is now staying at a North County motel.

“It’s just really upsetting and aggravating to me that one of the governor’s departments released a guy who is such an aberration and outlier and it doesn’t advise the public,” Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer said last week. "That’s crazy to me. So the only thing I can do under the law is warn people and get his picture out there and build awareness of him, but I can’t do much else.”

Smith claims to have killed three boys, and molested over 200.

Spitzer and other public health officials in the state are now calling on Gov. Gavin Newsom to reinstate Smith's sex offender status, as it was removed back in 2005.
