Cashless Casinos? It Could Become Reality Thanks To The Coronavirus

The casino industry is one of the last few businesses that works mainly with paper money. And, thankfully for my bank account, no states currently offer cashless payments on casino floors.

But that could all change as Nevada gaming regulators have just set a meeting for later this month to discuss that very subject.

The American Gaming Association released a report claiming that 59% of people who visited a casino in the last year were less likely to use cash because of the coronavirus pandemic. However, some fear that such easy electronic access to money could create a dangerous gateway for overspending (even more) at the casino.

The AGA also noted in its report that digital payments could be limited by preset amounts, and/or time of gameplay. And there is a bonus for those with customer loyalty cards... The casino customer loyalty number could be immediately tied to your spending, so if you win, the funds would be directly deposited into your account.

“Advancing opportunities for digital payments has been one of our top priorities since my first day at the AGA," said Bill Miller, president and CEO of the AGA. "It aligns with gaming’s role as a modern, 21st century industry and bolsters our already rigorous regulatory and responsible gaming measures. The COVID-19 pandemic made it all the more important to advance our efforts to provide customers with the payment choice they are more comfortable with and have increasingly come to expect in their daily lives.”
