INGLEWOOD (CNS) - The Coroner's Office today released the name of a 37-year-old construction worker who was killed in a fall at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood.

He was identified as Juan Becerra, of Brownsville, Texas, according to the coroner's office.

Becerra was pronounced dead at 11:10 a.m. Friday.

The builder, Turner AECOM Hunt, issued a statement confirming that an iron worker fell from the roof structure of the stadium and died at the scene.

“This is an extremely sad day. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and colleagues at this extremely difficult time,'' the statement said.

“We work extremely hard to prevent days like this and we have halted all construction activity. Counseling services will be made available to all workers on site to support them in the difficult days and weeks ahead.''

The Los Angeles Times reported that Becerra fell at least 60 feet while working on the roof in the southeast corner of the stadium near one of the massive concrete columns that support the structure.

The newspaper also reported that the death came a day after the number of known cases of COVID-19 among workers at the stadium increased to 12, seven of them coming in the last eight days.

The $5 billion stadium under construction at the former site of the Hollywood Park racetrack will be home to the Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers.

“We are tremendously saddened by the loss of a construction worker at the stadium site today,'' said a statement issued by SoFi Stadium, the Rams and Los Angeles.

“Our sincerest thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of the individual who passed away. Thousands of people who have worked on this project to date are hurting, and we are committed that they get the support they need.''

“...The safety of our construction team and all of our employees is the foremost priority of our organizations, and we will continue to work with our partners and local authorities to deliver on this commitment.''

The first scheduled major event at the stadium is on Aug. 14, when the Rams and the New Orleans Saints are scheduled to play a preseason game.
