If you have a few moments Friday afternoon, you'll want to step outside and look up to see the Air Force's famous Thunderbirds. The aeronautical team is set to honor frontline COVID-19 responders and essential workers on Friday with formation flights over Los Angeles and San Diego.
“It is an honor for our team to salute the countless Californians who have committed to keeping the communities safe during this difficult time in our nation,” said Lt. Col. John Caldwell, commander of the U.S. Air Force Air Demonstration Squadron. “We hope to give onlookers a touching display of American resolve that honors those serving on the frontline of our fight against COVID-19.”
Residents along the flight path will have the chance to see a formation of six F-16C/D Fighting Falcons conducting the flyovers, which are intended to salute health care workers, first responders, military and other essential personnel.
Residents along the flight path can expect a few moments of jet noise as the aircraft pass overhead, along with the sight of a half-dozen high- performance aircraft flying in precise formation.
Flyovers in San Diego are scheduled to begin at noon Friday and last 15 minutes. Flyovers in Los Angeles will start at 1:10 p.m. that day and last 30 minutes. Viewers of the event can tag the flyover on social media at #AmericaStrong and #Thunderbirds.
Residents are encouraged to view the flyovers from the safety of their homes while maintaining social distancing guidelines. Officials are also discouraging people from gathering at landmarks or hospitals in large groups to view the flyover.
A more detailed flight route will be released on Thursday.
