COSTA MESA (CNS) - The Los Angeles Chargers have a selection in each of the four rounds in today's final day of the three-day 2020 NFL draft after not have a selection on the second day.
The Chargers have the sixth pick in the fourth round, the fifth in the fifth round, the seventh in the sixth round and the sixth in the seventh round.
The Chargers traded their second- and third-round choices to the New England Patriots on Thursday for a first-round choice, the 23rd overall selection, which they used to draft Oklahoma linebacker Kenneth Murray.
“We're not out a second-round pick because we just used it in the first round so we're really just out a third-round pick,” Chargers general manager Tom Telesco said.
“As a personnel staff ... you hold on to your picks, you'd actually like more picks, but he's a player that was just a premium player for us.”
The 6-foot, 2-inch, 242-pound Murray was a third-team All-America selection by The Associated Press in 2019 when he made 102 tackles and 17 tackles for losses, both team highs.
Murray started all 42 games in his three seasons with the Sooners. In 2017 he became Oklahoma's first true freshman to start a season opener at inside linebacker since 1975.
“Kenneth has been a great leader for us, a starter from day one," Sooners coach Lincoln Riley said. “He was one of the most influential and active players we've ever had in terms of off-the-field activities and has just been a great all-around Sooner.
“He's also a tremendous example of the progress of 'Speed D' and we look forward to him having a great career and becoming an instant-impact player with the Chargers."
Since the start of the common draft era in 1967, three future Hall of Famers have been the No. 23 selection -- punter Ray Guy, tight end Ozzie Newsome and cornerback Ty Law.
Fourteen players selected with the 23rd pick since 1967 have made a Pro Bowl, including 11 that were selected to multiple Pro Bowls.
The Chargers began the draft Thursday by selecting Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert with the sixth overall choice.
The 6-foot, 5-inch, 236-pound Herbert's highlights at Oregon include setting school career records for completions (827) and attempts (1,293) and being second with 95 touchdown passes and 10,541 passing yards.
