A college student is out on bail after he was arrested on suspicion of making criminal threats, assault and vandalism while making racist and homophobic rant that was all caught on video.
Dayton Kingery, 21, a student at Chapman University in Orange County, was arrested on Tuesday after video showed him in a classroom cursing at the other students, saying that he's been drinking and using obscenities that targeted black and gay people.
Other students in the class confronted him, escalating the situation as they try and force Kingery of the class, and tossing a backpack at him. Video shows the suspect throwing the backpack to the ground and stomping on it.
Kingery was later arrested and booked on suspicion of making criminal threats and felony vandalism charges for breaking a computer that was in the backpack, according to a spokesperson for the Orange Police Department.
Police say Kingery allegedly assaulted a 65-year-old security guard, resulting in a charge of elder abuse for him.
Chapman University President Daniele Struppa said in a statement Tuesday that the university was taking approapriate legal and disciplinary action against the student for his "racist and homophobic statements" as well as for his "inappropriate and disrespectful behavior."
"I also want to extend my deepest apologies to the Black and LGBTQIA communities who were specifically targeted during today’s incident," Struppa wrote on Twitter. "This type of behavior is absolutely not tolerated. Together, we must create a safe environment for all students, faculty and staff. Each one of us is equally responsible and accountable for a campus climate that respects our differences and celebrates our diversity."
No one was injured in the incident.
