LOS ANGELES (CNS) - The National Conference of Democratic Mayors today elected Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti to a two-year term as its new president.
``I am honored and humbled to be elected president of the Democratic Mayors. Washington may be broken, but America is not,'' Garcetti said. ``As mayors, we see up close how in their cities and towns the American people continue to innovate, work and create national change from the ground up.''
Garcetti replaces Denver Mayor Michael Hancock as president of the NCDM.
``As I pass the torch to my friend Mayor Garcetti and shift to my new role as vice president, I'm eager to help build on this momentum and ensure we deliver in 2020,'' Hancock said.
As president, Garcetti will lead a network of more than 500 Democratic mayors to focus on the nation's challenges, including homelessness, climate change, affordable housing, gun violence, economic inequality, creating community wealth, immigration and healthcare, according to the NCDM.
