The U.S. Army has issued a fraud alert in response to fake text messages informing recipients that they've been drafted by the military and ordering them to report for immediate departure to Iran.
The fraud alert was issued after the fake messages popped up in numerous states, The New York Times reports.
Officials say that although men between 18 and 25 years of age still must register for selective service to be eligible for certain programs, the current military remains all-volunteer... and it would take an act of Congress to change that.
"The Selective Service System is conducting business as usual,” the Selective Service System’s official Facebook page said. “In the event that a national emergency necessitates a draft, Congress and the President would need to pass official legislation to authorize a draft."
