HOLLYWOOD (CNS) - The chase of a suspected stolen Mercedes-Benz ended in Hollywood near the Hollywood & Highland complex with one suspect in custody and a second suspect on the loose this morning.
The chase began about 7:40 p.m. Thursday, according to the Los Angeles Police Department, although it was unclear exactly where it started.
Officers from the LAPD's Wilshire Division were following the vehicle when an assault on a police officer occurred, according to department spokesman Officer Mike Lopez.
“A traffic collision occurred between the suspect's vehicle and a police vehicle,” LAPD Sgt. Mark Cohan told reporters at the scene. “Another pursuit was initiated where the suspects had a collision... at Johnny Grant Way and Highland (Avenue) and both suspects fled into... the Hollywood & Highland complex.”
Officers swarmed the complex and customers in some businesses were told to shelter in place, Cohan said.
“One suspect was quickly apprehended, the second suspect fled on foot,” Cohan said. “A perimeter was established and, unfortunately, we believe the second suspect was able to flee through the perimeter.”
A report that the suspect had jumped onto a Metro Red Line train was unfounded, Cohan said.
The suspects did not display any weapons throughout the pursuit and search, Cohan said.
About 10:30 p.m., LAPD Capt. Steve Lurie tweeted “the search is over, a suspect is in custody, and there is no threat to the community.”
Lurie added operations at the Hollywood & Highland complex were back to normal and thanked everyone for their patience.
No officers were injured, Lopez said.
